Car seats play a crucial role in car safety, the more supportive a seat, the safer they are. This is down to two main reasons.

The first is control. By securely holding your body in place you are able to maintain better control of the car, both in normal day to day driving and during extreme direction changes, when taking avoiding action for pedestrians, animals and other cars for example. It is precisely during these extreme circumstances that you need to be in control of the car the most, the last thing you need at these times is having to support your body by leaning on the door or by supporting your body with the steering wheel. The seats found in the majority of non performance cars offer very little lateral support, if any. The reason for this is ease of access. The car manufacturers compromise the safety of their vehicles for the sake of sales which is understandable but after a driver has becomes used to their car, the lack of support offered by the seats becomes obvious during normal cornering let alone when the car is driven enthusiastically or as mentioned above, during extreme direction changes.

The second is crash safety. The car seats supplied by the car manufacturer are designed to absorb a certain amount of impact to protect the driver and the passengers during an accident. There has recently been a flood of cheap aftermarket "sport seats" from unknown manufacturers. Don't be fooled by these seats, the price may be low but the protection they give a driver in an accident is totally unproven. In our opinion the safest choice is either to keep the original seats or to purchase seats from companies with experience in motorsport and specifically, experience of manufacturing seats to FIA standards. OMP offer race seats which are FIA homologated meaning their seats have been rigorously tested and have been proven to protect the driver in high speed accidents and have been shown to be suitable for use in international motorsport i.e. WRC, WTCC, Le Mans and so on. The knowledge OMP has gained from manufacturing these race seats filters directly down to their road seats meaning that the crash safety of their road seats meet or exceed the impact protection offered by the original seats.
